Explorer and Primitives

An explorer ventured into a new territory and was captured.  The local tribe, determined to insolate themselves from the world outside, had developed a custom whereby all intruders, once caught, would be put to death.  On such an occasion, the captive would be marched to the elders of the clan and he would be made to say something, anything.  The elders would then determine the truthfulness or falsehood of what the man said.  If what the man said was found to be true, he would be executed before the God of Truthfulness; if what the man said was found to be false, he would be killed before the God of Falsehood--either way the intruder was doomed.

One day, when the latest captured trespasser was going through the fateful ceremony, he said something that actually saved his life.
