Alexander the Great, the young Macedonian king whose thirst for conquests brought him and his army from Greece to Egypt, Palestine, Mesopotamia, Persia, and all the way to India.

As a boy Alexander was tutored by Aristotle, but the Greek philosopher's teachings on balance and moderation seemed to be of little influence on him; more fascinating to him was Homer's epics about ancient heroes, which he carried with him on his military pursuits.

Like many people of his age, Alexander assumed that the earth was surrounded by waters on all sides and he was determined to see the very edge of the world.  Tired and rebellious generals and soldiers, however, forced Alexander to abandon his plan to push farther East beyond Indus River.  He died on his way back home, at the age of 33.
