While engaged in a handshake, pat the other person's arm or shoulder: A certain sense of superiority is assumed here. Whether the person is being condecending in a demeaning way depends on the his "qualification" for such behavior--age, position, etc.--or the lack of it. For a person "qualified" for such a handshake, it is his effort to show his cordiality and modesty. For a person who's not really "qualified," it could be a sign of egotism and arrogance. |
